Our History
A NEW BEGINNING
In 2005, Lorilei Peters and John Duncan purchased the property with a vision to create a sanctuary for abused and neglected animals. Since then, DSEC has become a safe haven for horses, mules, donkeys, and minis that have been rescued from slaughter or other difficult situations.
A Place of Healing
In the summer of 2022, Lorilei started saving horses from being sent to slaughter. To date, DSEC has rescued and rehabilitated over 271 horses, and the center continues to provide care and shelter for many more. Through its rescue efforts, DSEC gives animals a second chance at life, and works to place them in responsible and loving homes.
At DSEC, the rehabilitation process for rescued animals is a priority. The center provides a nurturing and safe environment where animals can heal from the physical and emotional trauma of abuse and neglect. Once rehabilitated, the animals are carefully matched with new families who can provide them with the love and care they deserve.
Through media appearances and training programs, DSEC strives to increase public awareness of the plight of these horses. The center works with various government agencies that need help with special needs cases and adoptions. DSEC also welcomes volunteers to come and spend time with the animals and help with their rehabilitation and care.
DSEC is not just a sanctuary for animals – it is also a place of healing for its volunteers. The center provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment for those who are passionate about animal welfare. Volunteers describe their experiences at DSEC as soulful, healing, and life-changing. The work they do at the center helps make a difference in the lives of animals in need, and in their own lives as well.
All of the horses/equines we adopt out have all been seen by a vet, farrier and are up to date on vaccinations and worming as well as any extra care they might have needed.
